In this century Global Change is a tremendous challenge for the human civilization. There are already reactions on the precursors of anthropogenic caused climate change, scarcities of water, food and energy resources, political instabilities, increasingly unequal distribution of wealth and the loss of robustness of ecosystems.
As new science with the goal to answer these challenges Earth System Engineering covers the analysis of changes of the Earth System, and tries to find ways to a more sustainable lifestyle of societies. iesp intends to encourage and inspire people to develope a conception what is really essential for life and societies through self reflection on the interdependence of human cultures, social structures, economy, and the global environment.
Maybe, humankind will need geo-engineering technologies one day if thresholds of climate change cannot be avoided. But certainly “engineering” of our societies to a significantly higher degree of sustainability is necessary to cope with the urgent challenges of global change.
IESP is a body of individuals having in common deep concern about destructive human intervention into the Earth System and dedication to provide solutions. We are a network of scientists, politicians and business representatives being obliged to take responsibility for the Earth System.
