IFAT China in Shanghai

Earth System Engineering: Challenges and Chances for the Water Sector

Workshop on Earth System Engineering at the IFAT Shanghai

M
ay 6, 2010

Language: English translated to Chinese and vice versa

Organized by CRAES, the Chinese Research Academy of the Environmental Sciences (Peking), and IESP; in close cooperation with the Bavarian ministry for the environment and Messe Munich International.

Prof. Meng Wei, president of CRAES, and Prof. Peter Wilderer, winner of the Stockholm Water Price in 2003, and other experts from China andEurope gave presentations and discussed global challenges in the areas of climate change, energy and food supply, and social justice as they relate to the general theme of water. The goal was to find solutions and guidelines for responsible actions in policy and economics.

Program

Global warming, energy crisis, water scarcity, social conflicts and reduction of biodiversity – these global challenges relate to human needs for energy and resources that result in large-scale impacts within the Earth system. Earth system engineering has the potential to alleviate these impacts. This workshop will enable dialogs between Chinese and European Experts. Three sessions with presentations of 20 minutes will be followed by discussions.
